Central Component Design Engineer

Job Description

JOB PURPOSE:

The Jobholder is responsible for:

  • Managing the Central Component Design Team
  • Preparing Component Design Calculation Sheets and Design Documents
  • Reviewing and approving all designs prepared by the Central Component Design officer
  • Designing special products that comply with the Client and Project Specifications, FPI Standards, and the applicable International Standards, that are fit-for-purpose, and cost-effective
  • Defining the required qualification tests for the special products
  • Following up on the prototype testing process with the Manufacturing Unit Technical Team

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

 Managing the Central Component Design Team:

  • Review and approve all documents prepared by the Central Component Design Officers.
  • Provide the required training to the Central Component Design Officers.
  • Prepare Component Design Calculation Sheets and Design Documents
  • Manage the Succession Planning of the Central Component Design Team.

 

Component Design

  • Provide the Unit Technical Team with design services for non-standard piping components and define the required qualification tests.
  • Define all the required product details, qualification requirements, and the prototype testing and process definition for all design requests.
  • Follow up on the testing to be performed, plans for the tests, testing process, results, reporting of these tests, and provide the Technical Managers with feedback on the outcome.

 

Product Selection and Technical Documentation

  • Review all submitted inquiry documents to understand the application requirements and design parameters.
  • Coordinate with the Technical Team to provide any missing design parameters or projects documents.
  • Coordinate with the Central Costing Department to understand the cost impact of the various product options and to select the most cost-effective and optimized product.
  • Issue Project Component Design Calculation Sheets and Technical Comments.

 

Project Specific Product Qualification

  • Assist the Unit Technical Team in defining the qualification requirements of Fiberglass products for ongoing projects.
  • Review, and approve the qualification test drawings.

Manufacturing Unit Support

  • Provide answers to component design questions raised by the Production, QC, and Site Services Departments.
  • Maintain knowledge of the production tooling and availability of products, mandrels, and molds within the Region.

 

International Standards and Specifications Review

  • Review and understand all the latest International Standards applicable to Fiberglass Products.
  • Review and understand all the latest Key End User and Client Specifications applicable to Fiberglass Products.

 

Value Engineering

  • Assist the Manufacturing Unit Technical Team by offering product selection advice as well as optimized custom designs for the Value Engineering Process.
  • Assist the Head of Value Engineering in establishing and maintaining the Central Knowledge Library.
  • Maintain full knowledge of the latest development activities undertaken by the Product Engineering Division.

 

Department Policies, Procedures, and Performance Appraisal

  • Apply existing departmental procedures and controls to cover all areas of technical activities.
  • Recommend improvements to existing departmental policies and procedures.
  • Set individual objectives.
  • Recommend departmental objectives.

Job relevant information (BOUNDARIES & DECISION-MAKING AUTHORITY)

  • Has authority to select or approve the type of non-standard component to offer on technical grounds for all Non-Value Engineered inquiries.
  • Must consult with the Technical Manager prior to finalizing the recommendations for Key Value Engineered inquiries.

Skills

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, & SKILLS:

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (4 Yrs.) in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent with at least 2 years work experience in designing/drafting of Fiberglass Piping.

Or

  • Engineering Diploma (2 Yrs.) with at least 8 years work experience in designing/drafting of Fiberglass Piping.

 

Preferred Experience:

  • Composite Pipe Design

 

Job-Specific Skills:

  • In depth knowledge of piping applicable stress and strain theories and formulas.
  • In depth knowledge of fibreglass pipes applicable testing methods.
  • Detailed knowledge of the product applicable manufacturing techniques and processes.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of Excel use in solving engineering problems and Drafting programs (Microstation and AutoCAD).
  • Exceptional communication skills and ability to work in a dynamic, fast paced, diverse environment.
  • Fluent in reading, writing, and speaking in English.
